Everyone knows that college and graduate education is expensive, placing many graduates in significant debt. When they are planning to work in the human service fields, where salaries are modest this reality can cause individuals with much to offer to look elsewhere toward more lucrative opportunities. When this happens families and clients often end up without the services and professional help they need.
Last fall, Family Continuity applied to a national program designed to begin to address this problem. It was a long process, but in the end, we are very pleased to announce that Family Continuity’s Hyannis and Lawrence sites have received approval from the National Health Service Corps, to qualify licensed clinical staff for their Student Loan Forgiveness Program. This program is designed to encourage clinicians and other medical and dental personnel to work in areas of the country that are considered “under-served” and in need of qualified professional staff. Other Family Continuity sites were not considered because they serve areas of the state that do not qualify under federal guidelines as “under-served”.
For our Hyannis and Lawrence staff, the news is good. The plan provides forgiveness for up to $60,000.00 in school loans for full time clinicians over 2 years of service ($30,000.00 for part time clinicians). While there are some additional reporting requirements for the individual, the plan is fairly straightforward, allowing the benefit as long as they remain employees in good standing.
This is a terrific program where everyone wins. The clinician defrays a large portion of their educational costs, the agency recruits more qualified staff and the members of these communities we serve have access to the best clinical resources available.
